Lane

The Lane name appears sporadically in the trade directories but the information available suggests a long lived company. Henry Lane opened a “Botanic Drug Store” in Market Avenue, Plymouth around 1888. The first directory entry encountered is a Mrs Lane listed in 1912 at 1 & 5 Market Avenue, Plymouth. The later advertisements show Lane’s at 5 Market Avenue in 1948 and Saltash Street in 1955.

In 1939, a former Lane’s apprentice, EJ Rickard, a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, opened his own herbal dispensary. Rickard Lane’s was formed in 1954 when the two businesses merged and eleven years later W H Box was incorporated into the business at Mayflower Street where it still continues.
