Ching

The Ching name is one of many in Cornwall that is associated with being both a chemist and wine & spirit merchant in the 19th century.

J.S. Eyre

Jonathan Symes Eyre is perhaps the finest example of a chemist whose mineral water business outgrew his initial operations. The company bearing his name is one of Cornwall’s most prolifically found.

He is listed in 1883 as both a chemist and mineral water manufacturer but by 1889 is listed as JS Eyre & Co aerated and mineral water manufacturer. The company was later operated by Geake Bros who retained the JS Eyre name on their products. By 1937 the mineral water business had been taken over by Dennifords of Plymouth.

Shuker

Charles Beddoes Shuker is recorded in various companies in Launceston between 1889 and 1926, in 1889 he is also recorded as operating in Plympton, Devon.

The bottle below is from the Shuker & Reed partnership which is listed between 1906 and 1926. Interestingly, a stoneware flagon has recently come to light which indicates that the Shuker & Reed partnership were also operating as wine & spirit merchants in Launceston.
