Porthleven

Porthleven has, despite the attentions of Helston companies, managed to provide a number of interesting items from local chemists. A number of these are known from unused labels found in the old premises their have made their way onto the market loose or affixed to contemporary bottles.

Miners

J.H. Miners MPS is a post-1939 as the name was not encountered during research for this CD but is known from this unusual steel methylated spirits bottle bearing the company’s details and another labeled bottle. From another labeled item, it appears that he may have originated in the Slough area before relocating to Porthleven.

Although not strictly chemists, this partnership is responsible for a true medicine bottle from Porthleven although only a few examples are known. They are listed in directories around 1914 as Dr Henry William Spaight and Dr Chatterton Eric Elliston operating from 38 Coinage Hall St, Helston and Porthleven. Indeed, Spaight is listed as the Medical Officer for Porthleven district.
