Porthleven
Porthleven has, despite the attentions
of Helston companies, managed to provide a number of
interesting items from local chemists. A number of these are known from unused
labels found in the old premises their have made their way onto the market
loose or affixed to contemporary bottles.
Miners
J.H. Miners MPS is a post-1939 as the name was not encountered during
research for this CD but is known from this unusual steel methylated
spirits bottle bearing the company’s details and another labeled bottle. From
another labeled item, it appears that he may have originated in the





Polglase
W.M. Polglase MPS is listed in the 1926 trade
directory as operating from premises in Porthleven.


Robbins
Fred Robbins appears in the 1939 trade directory at premises in Porthleven.

Lionel
Rogers is not recorded amongst the trade directories consulted and is
presumably post 1939

Dr’s Spaight
& Elliston
Although
not strictly chemists, this partnership is responsible for a true medicine
bottle from Porthleven although only a few examples are
known. They are listed in directories around 1914 as Dr Henry William Spaight and Dr Chatterton Eric Elliston operating from 38
Coinage Hall St, Helston and Porthleven.
Indeed, Spaight is listed as the Medical Officer for Porthleven district.

Trestrail
James P. Trestrail is another incumbent not listed in the trade
directories consulted although judging by the recovered label this may be due
to a short duration in Porthleven

Winter is recorded in the 1902 trade directory.
