Redruth

 

Redruth has produced a number of interesting artefacts in keeping with its industrial importance in the 19th century although it seems to be eclipsed by the quantity of items from its rivals in Camborne.

 

Downing

 

H.Downing is yet another example of a company not strictly a chemist but falling happily into this collecting area. He, or possibly even she, is listed in 1926 as a hairderesser in Penryn Street, Redruth.

 

The company is known from the intriguing labeled black bottle below.

 

 

 

Edwards

 

Richard Sanderson Edwards is listed between 1873 and 1906 at 75 Fore Street, Redruth, his recorded artefacts include the ‘Edwards essence of Rennet’ bottle below.

 

 

 

Jones

 

G.E. Jones Ltd are listed in the 1926 trade directory as operating from the 75 Fore Street address previously occupied by Richard Sanderson Edwards.

 

 

 

 

Permewan

 

Dr Arthur Edward Permewan is recorded on the labeled medicine bottle pictured, he is listed in 1914 as operating from 4 Chapel St, Redruth. The listing also indicates that he was a local JP at the time.

 

He is another doctor listed as working at the West Cornwall Miners’ & Womens’ Hospital in West End, Redruth in 1914.

 

 

Sambell

 

John Sambell is listed between 1866 and 1883 at premises in Fore Street, Redruth.
