Roper

Robert & Frederick Roper, trading as Roper Bros, were a relatively well known company whose premises stood on the site of the University main hall opposite Sherwell church until after the war.

In 1889 the company is shown as being at 21 Tavistock Rd, by 1893 / 1895 they had relocated to 34 Tavistock Rd and 15 Ham St, Plymouth. From 1902 to 1919 the company is listed as having a branch at 58 Salisbury Rd, Plymouth.

Between 1926 and 1955 the 34 Tavistock Rd premises are listed under Roper & Lewis while in 1926 the Salisbury Rd premises are listed under Frederick Alfred Roper perhaps suggesting a separation of the siblings. The company’s Tavistock Rd premises must have been well known as 1940s ARP maps of Plymouth clearly show “Roper’s Corner” as a land mark on Tavistock Road.

Another company using the Roper name, HA Roper, operated in Ebrington St, Plymouth from 1902 to at least 1926
