Veterinary Medicines

 

The following are a selection of 1892 veterinary medicines with some unusual ingredients;

 

Colic Balls (for horses)

 

Take of –

 

Camphor…………………..30 grns

Extract of Indian hemp……..30 grns

Ginger, in powder………….4 drms

Treacle…………………….A sufficiency

 

Mix. To make 1 ball.

 

 

Blaine’s Mercurial for blisters

 

Take of –

 

Cantharides, in powder…………………1 oz

Resin…………………………………...1 oz

Venice turpentine……………………….1 oz

Palm oil………………………………...2 oz

Mercury perchloride……………………30 grns

 

The oil, turpentine, and resin are melted together, and then the other two ingredients stirred in. (Recommended for splints, spavins, etc in horses)

 

Lotion for Foot Rot

 

Take of –

 

Acetate of lead……………………..1 oz

Sulphate of copper…………………1 oz

Verdigris…………………………...2 oz

Oil of turpentine……………………1/2 pint

Acetic acid, dilute…………………..1 pint

 

The powders are boiled in the acid for about a quarter of an hour, and then the turpentine is added. To be well shaken before using
