Vicary / Vickery

The Vicary name suffers from mis-spelling in the trade directories sometimes appearing as Vicary and other times as Vickery at the same address. The company, in fact Thomas Vicary, operated from various premises in Bedford Street, Plymouth and is recorded between 1844 and 1878 in the trade directories.

The company has left only one bottle, a green skittle shaped mineral water bottle, the only coloured mineral bottle of this type known from Plymouth. The bottle bears the company’s address on the rear and the unusual spelling ‘Pharmacyx’ amongst the embossing on the front. Only one undamaged example of this bottle is unknown and sadly I have been unable to obtain a photograph of it.
